Counters from across the Yangtze region attended a training workshop on waterbird surveys at West Dongting Lake Nature Reserve, Hunan, in January 2015.
The workshop was organised by the Yangtze Waterbird Monitoring Network (YWMN) and took place on 7-9th January 2015, just before the 4th coordinated survey of wintering waterbirds in the Central and Lower Yangtze floodplain. Fifty counters from Hunan, Anhui, Jiangxi and Jiangsu provinces, part of the region included in the survey, attended the training.
Xudong Tao, YWMN’s project officer for WWT & WWF, together with Mr Zhang Hong, Chief Engineer of East Dongting Lake Nature Reserve, gave lectures that included a brief introduction to waterbird surveys, waterbird identification, survey skills, data collection and analysis, GIS systems and public communication.
This training greatly supported the network of counters that will take part in the coordinated survey, the first since 2011, in mid January 2015. This survey is very important for gaining an improved understanding of the status of many Asian waterbirds, many of which are likely to be in decline but for which there is currently a lack of good data. We will report on the results of the survey in due course.
