Review of Goose Managment Policy in Scotland [added 19/04/11]
Following a review of Scotland's goose management policy, the Scottish Government is considering ways of adapting management schemes to make them more responsive to conservation needs. The review suggests that current schemes have been very successful in protecting and sustaining many important goose populations but that the help available is inconsistent. As a result the Scottish Government is working with Scottish Natural Heritage and the National Goose Management Review Group to target funds accordingly.

For more information please see the Scottish Government website.

New Partnership for Goose & Swan Monitoring Programme [added 22/10/2010]
A new and stronger Partnership for monitoring the UK's internationally important migratory geese and swans has been formed. The Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust and Joint Nature Conservation Committee's Goose & Swan Monitoring Programme partnership has now been joined by Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH).

The inclusion of SNH in this long-term partnership will considerably strengthen the GSMP as many of the UK's most important goose populations, such as the Greenland White-fronted Goose and two populations of Barnacle Goose, are concentrated, or even found wholly, in Scotland. Furthermore, at many key sites detailed management arrangements for geese are in operation and there is a strong interest in effective goose management among a broad range of stakeholders. SNH's strengthened commitment to the monitoring of these important populations is therefore most welcome, and will help to ensure that their conservation status is accurately tracked, that the most important sites where they occur are adequately identified, and that future management is based upon a sound understanding of their population dynamics.
